Whiskeytown ‘Kokes On Epic Bite!
Fishing is very consistent for trout and salmon trollers visiting the upper end of the Sacramento Valley. At Whiskeytown Reservoir the summer kokanee bite is peaking. At Shasta rainbows and kings are on the rampage in deep water.
“I was on Whiskeytown today and we got 20 quality kokanee in just over 3 hours,” related Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service. “Early on UV pink and straight chrome Apex Lures teamed with Sling Blades worked well. As the day went on the Apex bite slowed a bit, but the bite on pink hoochies and pink Uncle Larry’s Spinners heated up. The fish were bright and clean. They averaged a solid 14 inches. The hot spot for me was near the bridge. The fish were holding from 40 to 60 feet deep.”
“I was on Shasta last Friday with my wife and we did well while working deep water in Waters Gulch. While rolling rigged anchovies and shad from 50 to 100 feet deep we got 4 kings that averaged about 2.5 pounds each and added a pair of husky rainbows,” tipped Elster.
Bass fishing is going strong at both Shasta and Whiskeytown. During the daylight hours the best fishing is had by guys tossing Senkos and natural colored worms around main lake points. Early and late poppers, Spooks and wake baits are drawing fish to the surface.
As of press time Shasta was 102 feet from the top and dropping.Back To Reports
