Dunking squid and shrimp flies has been the top method on recent rockfishing trips out of Monterey.
"Some albacore starting to show about 20 miles out from the harbor," said Arcoleo. "Our last few trips out yielded around a fish per rod, with the latest producing 16 tuna for our 14 anglers."
Patricia Snider from Sam's Fishing Fleet confirmed the slow down in salmon action, with 11 salmon for 24 people taken on the latest trip. The fish were caught while fishing near Fort Ord.
Santa Cruz...
Rockfish action is great along the Santa Cruz coast when the weather cooperates. The Sea Stag III and the Stagnaro II returned early on Saturday, July 20th with limits of assorted Rockcod, according to Ken Stagnaro of Sea Stag Sportfishing. On Sunday the Stagnaro II's 14 passengers caught their limits of Rockcod and a 35 pound Halibut. The Sea Stag III went Salmon fishing and her passengers averaged a fish per rod. The weather was flat calm.
A live bait trip by the Sea Stag III on Friday, July 19, yielded limits of rockfish and The 12 passengers caught limits of rockfish and 20 Lingcod for 12 passengers.
On Wednesday, the Wild Wave headed up the coast with 28 passengers on board and 25 scoops of live bait, destination New Year's Island. "The conditions were tougher than we hoped, with green water and a little land breeze," observed Captain Mike Baxter of Shamrock Charters. "The large-sized sardines were so lively it appeared as if they were trying to mate as we let them down. They were swimming so fast they were causing tangles."
The anglers still managed to catch 30 lingcod, 1/2 to 3/4 limits of rockcod and two big halibut.
The Salmon bite continued to produce a few limits for boaters who fished near Capitola and Cement Ship. "The numbers where Wiki limited with Wiki Whackers and White Krocodiles are 36'55/121'56," said Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine. "A few other anglers in the same area caught 1-3 Salmon. The Salmon are in 50-80 feet of water and the fish were caught on the bottom."
The albacore fishing is good for some and slow for others. "The best report of albacore was at 36'28/122'32, 36'30/122'30 and 36'32/122'38," added Fraser. " Some boats on Wednesday, July 24 had just one fish, while others had 15 albacore. The average was 5-8 Albacore. The best lures were Channel Island Fish Traps trolled and Zukini Brooms. A few other fish were caught on Blue and White Cedar Plugs and Jerry Garcias. The water was calm on the outside, but there was some wind chop for the ride home."
Half Moon Bay...
Salmon and rockfish are both providing excellent action. "The salmon just keep coming in by the boat load, as evidenced by our last two trips out to the Farallon Islands and N. Buoy," reported Captain Smith aboard Riptide. "Our passengers have managed to catch their limit of salmons along with taking limits of assorted rockcod fishing along local reefs."
Smith also noted hearing reports of solid striped bass action being experienced near Pacifica, although he hasn't gone after them.
"The rockfishing continues to thrive for anglers fishing shallow water near Pescadero," noted Bill Beckett from Huck Finn Sportfishing. "The last trip on the Queen of Hearts yielded a total of 42 limits of rockfish, 11 lingcod to 15 pounds, 16 cabezon and a 20 pound halibut."
Emeryville...
Party boat enthusiasts mooching and trolling outside of the Golden Gate for salmon are averaging 1-1/2 fish per rod, according to Gary Gentry of Emeryville Marina Sportfishing Center. The C-Gull's10 passengers managed to catch near-limits of salmon to 29 pounds on their last trip. The fish were caught while fishing along the Marin Coast.
New Salmon Queen reported 45 fish to a whopping 34 pounds on Wednesday. The Seeker had a solid 14 fish for 12 anglers, topped by a 26 pound chinook.
"Live bait drifters are also experiencing a steady bite being outside the bay near Seal Rock," indicated Gentry. Seven anglers drifting live bait aboard the Dandy caught their limits of halibut up to 23 pounds. New Huck Finn also took part in the live bait action, returning with 45 halibut to 26 pounds.
Berkeley...
"We've been experiencing some solid salmon action just outside the Gates near Duxbury Reef, with an average of 1 fish per rod being caught," reported Chris Nelson of Berkeley Marina Sport Center.
Four boats trolling for salmon out of the Berkeley marina averaged a solid one fish per rod, with several of the boats producing near-limits.
New Easy Rider took out 19 anglers to catch 20 fish to 27 pounds, while the 24 passengers aboard New El Dorado III managed to haul in 38 salmon up to 31 pounds. Eighteen anglers fishing aboard El Dorado I came up shy of their limits with 33 fish to 31 pounds. New Golden Eye had 17 anglers on their trolling trip as they put 27 salmon to 32 pounds in the box.
Golden Eye ended up with 22 salmon to a whopping 44 pounds for 14 anglers.
"We finally hooked into a good school of bass while fishing Seal Rock," noted Jim Smith aboard Happy Hooker. "The 20 passengers fishing with me managed to boat 20 halibut to 30 pounds, 15 stripers to 12 pounds, 13 lings to 15 pounds and several assorted rockcod."
"On Today, Thursday, the bite is looking just as productive for bass numbers as yesterday. My boaters have already put 20 bass in the box and were still not done yet," he added.
Richmond...
"My last few trips out for salmon along Muir Beach and Rocky Point has produced a solid 1 to 1-1/2 fish per rod and these fish being caught are very large," stated Captain Barry Canevaro of Fish Hookers Sportfishing. "I had a trip go out and we put several big fish in the box including a whopping 41 pounder caught by a client."
"I am starting to hear reports of tuna showing up, but the action isn't wide open as of yet," he added.
"Until the tuna start showing up in greater numbers, I will be busy with live bait fishing from the F. Buoy to the Berkeley Flats," noted Canevaro. "My five anglers managed to catch 8 halibut to 11 pounds on our last trip out."
"I haven't had the opportunity to do much fishing as of late with my boat going in and out of the shop," said Captain Mark Delnero of Fin Addict Sportfishing. "However, when I do manage to get out the fishing has held consistent and produced steady action."
Mark was offered the chance to fish along with his friends and they boated their limit of salmon weighing 11-27 pounds. "It was nice to get off the water before noon with a fresh limit. The fish were picked up on the troll fishing the incoming tide," added Delnero.
Mark has also been running out for stripers and halibut on live bait trips to the Berkeley Flats. A recent trip out with Mark yielded a solid one fish per rod on halibut with no bass showing in the catch.
Bodega Bay...
"It's been wide open salmon fishing all across the board for our boats trolling near the Fort Ross Buoy," said Mike Fontani of Bodega Bay Sportfishing. "Now is the prime time to jump aboard any available vessel to get out and take a limit of tasty salmon home."
The New Sea Angler's 34 passengers caught their limits of salmon weighing up to a whopping 36 pounds. The New Sea Angler followed up with a successful day out on the following morning, when the 28 anglers boated limits to 32 pounds. The Predator also took advantage as they landed full limits of salmon to 28 pounds.
Fort Bragg...
According to Brandon Van Dine of Anchor Charters, anglers fishing out of Fort Bragg have managed to take a solid limit of just shy on all recent trips leaving the harbor for the past week. "I took out 17 anglers aboard the Lady Irma and they bagged 31 salmon to 30 pounds while fishing near Hair Creek on Wednesday," he stated.
"Shallow water rockfishing has also produced a solid bite fishing just south of Fort Bragg," said Van Dine. A recent rockfishing expedition yielded 11 red rockfish and 9 lingcod for 7 anglers.
"We only had one boat out running for salmon Wednesday, the Rumblefish, and they brought back full limits of salmon for 18 clients," noted Ashley Diez of Noyo Fishing Center. She said the boats are catching the fish while trolling hoochies, Apexes and Rotary Salmon Killers just outside the harbor.
