Wednesday's albacore fishing aboard the Wild Wave showed signs of an
improvement in the fishing, according to Mike Baxter at Shamrock Charters.
"We caught 35 fish and had a bigger sized average," said Baxter. "We had a
lot of fish in the 15 to 20 pound size. The scores today sounded real good.
We have nice weather and the Penn Fishing University open boat Friday and
Saturday and are looking forward to this weekend."
The Wild Wave fished rockfish and lingcod on Thursday and ended the day with
big sacks of fish, with limits of nice rockfish and around a ling a person.
"We made a couple of drifts for halibut as well and caught two in a short
amount of time," he added. "There are halibut all up and down the coast; try
some new spots, since the beaches up the coast are all holding fish. Look
for soft bottom: some bait schools and a weed free drift will result in
flattie action."
Monterey
The albacore bite broke loose this week 20 to 30 miles off the Monterey
Coast, with reports of over 5 fish per rod, according to Chris Arcoleo at
Chris' Fishing Trips. "I spoke with the captain aboard the Tornado at 1:00
and they had 60 tuna in the box averaging 15 to 20 pounds," he said. "The
fish are chasing after live bait."
"Our rockcod fishing has been just as consistent, with most trips producing
limits," noted Arcoleo. "Anglers are catching the bottomfish on shrimp flies
and bars while fishing at Point Sur."
Half Moon Bay
Recent rockcod trips have been very successful for anglers fishing along the
San Mateo Coast near Pescadero.
"Anglers fishing down south at Pescadero are taking full limits of assorted
rockcod, along with some cabezon and lingcod mixed in the bag," explained
Bill Beckett of Huck Finn Sportfishing.
Salmon scores for Half Moon Bay anglers have ranged between 1/2 a fish to 1
fish per rod, with the top action being experienced from the light ship to
the Duxbury Reef.
"The New Mary S II took out a handful of anglers to fish for tuna 18 miles
from the harbor," added Beckett. "They returned with an average of five
albacore each, along with a few bluefin as well."
Emeryville
Anglers fishing aboard pot luck trips out of Emeryville Sport Center are
taking home a mixed bag of halibut, rockcod and lingcod while fishing off
the Marin County Coastline.
"Most of our pot luck trips are yielding two fish around or better on
halibut, along with 2/3 limits of assorted rockcod and one fish per rod
targeting lings," explained Frank Salazar of Emeryville Marina. "We also ran
a few albacore trips between 40 and 50 miles out, which is producing 2 fish
per rod on tuna, and a few bluefin mixed in the catch. The bite is far from
hot. We're catching a few fish then moving to find more."
According to Salazar, salmon scores have been mixed between one fish per rod
and limits. "Were catching the fish both trolling and mooching, but trolling
is the better way to go," he said. "The fish average 15 to 20 pounds, with
several over 20 pounds."
Berkeley
Live bait, pot luck trips out of the Berkeley Marina continue to pay off for
boaters fishing along the Marin county coast, according to Nadine Buus at
Berkeley Marina.
"Were catching a few halibut every trip, but for the most
part, it's been near limits or limits of assorted rockcod and one fish
around on lings," she noted.
On the other hand, salmon scores have been up and down, with an average 1/2
a fish per rod. "Our boats are trolling the Duxbury Reef area with bait and
lures," said Buus. "We did have several trips, however, return with over one
fish per rod during a few trips thru the week."
Richmond
The south San Francisco Bay leopard shark bit is wide open, with trips
producing an average 15 shark a trip.
"Were still catching a lot of small males, but it's been no problem in
catching a limit throughout the day," said Captain Mark Delnero of Fin
Addict Sportfishing. "For the past week, my clients have caught their limits
on both the incoming and outgoing tide. However, the outgo is better."
According to Delnero, the top areas for shark in the south bay is between
the A Buoy and Pack Bell Park.
Bodega Bay
Light tackle, shallow water rockcod trips continue to provide outstanding
fishing, now that salmon scores have slowed and tuna trips are on hold for
the week.
"We have a tuna trip set for next week and salmon fishing has been too slow
to target them," reported Gina Watts of Bodega Bay Sportfishing. "So for
now, we are focusing on rockcod up near Fort Ross and were catching limits
every trip using shrimp flies and diamond bars."
Fort Bragg
The albacore bite has slowed down, and the fish have moved into warmer water
20 miles off the coast of Fort Bragg.
"The wind has been blowing for a few days and it pushed the tuna back out
into deeper water," reported Michelle Gagne at Noyo Fishing Center. "We had
to cancel several trips already and we are still waiting for the wind to
calm so we can get back on the water."
"Salmon fishing has also been very slow, with our boats only catching 2 to 4
fish per trip," she said. "Instead, we are focusing on light tackle rockcod
trips north of the harbor. On Each trip, we are catching limits or near
limits of rockcod and one fish per rod or more on lingcod." The bottomfish
are falling for shrimp flies and jigs.
