Bluefin On The Nibble
“Our day started off slow,” reported Excel skipper Justin Fleck September 3, “with not much sign of fish anywhere. After lunch things started to perk up and we put together a nice afternoon. We ended up with 40 good grade bluefin, 15 fatso albacore, and seven yellowfin. We are going to spend the night and try it again tomorrow.”
Intrepid Gets Walkoff
“Bottom of the ninth, two out, swinging for the fences,” wrote Intrepid skipper Kevin Osborne September 3.
“Got a hold of it. The day started slow and got slower. We left the area and went looking. Next thing you know we had Bluefin Tuna between 80 to 100 pounds boiling around the boat. They wanted to bite and they sure did. We ended up with almost 20 of them and lost quite a few others. Lots of guys were throwing out (bait with) their 30-pound setups and not having a chance. When the guys started putting out their 50 and 60-pound gear they started hitting the deck. We are getting in tomorrow morning and turning around on an 8 day.”
A Nice Day
“We had an absolutely excellent day,” said the report from Polaris Supreme September 2, “fishing the really good size yellowtail. They were up to 40 pounds. We also had nine nice size yellowfin to go with it. Our weather is great. The fall is just a really fun time to fish. We have a couple trips left this year with open spots. If you want to do Guadalupe, we have two five-day trips on Sept 29 and Oct 6. If you want to do the Ridge and Alijos, we have an eight-day September 20, 10-day October 14 and an 11-day on December 2.”
Good Food, Too
“Captain Joe stopped the big boat on a meter mark last night and we awoke to hungry Yellowfin tuna at grey light,” read Qualifier 105’s report for September 2. “We enjoyed a good bite on a beautiful grade of YFT up to a nice 50 pounder caught by JC Hardemion. We saw a cool variety of fish during the day with dorado, Yellowfin tuna and skip jack before Nona Grancell caught the first of our albacore. Only three longfin were boated but they were all 35-pound class fish.
“We are making a move tonight to an area where a code group boat had a good score on some big Bluefin, so after a beautiful sunset and tasty, perfectly prepared tri tip steak dinner we are excited about our prospects for tomorrow.”
Rooster’s Last Day
“We finished our trip offshore and had excellent fishing,” wrote Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates September 3. “We had a mix of twenty five to forty pound yellowfin and bluefin. The morning started of slow and the afternoon was great. What a way to end a great five day trip .We will be heading home tonight and back at the dock between eight and eight thirty. The group had a great time and enjoyed themselves.”
Looking For Gold
“Today we went prospecting a new area,” noted the report from Royal Star September 3. “We spent the first half of the day burning through the glasses. With four 20# bluefin to show for our efforts, it was looking like a slow day. We then received a call that there was clean water within striking distance.
“The next call was that the clean water was holding 25 to 45-pound bluefin. Needless to say we didn't hesitate and headed for the area at full cruise. Upon arrival we promptly found a school and kept three to six fish going until dark. We finished up with just over 100 bluefin and a few yellowfin for our efforts. Needless to say we will be starting here in the morning.”
Small Yellowfin Close
“Just a few hours after clearing Point Loma the Shogun was chasing tuna,” said September 3’s report from the Shogun. “We managed several jig stops with following bait hook ups on the sardine. These were 8 to 15-pound yellowfin, on the smaller side but great action on what we labeled a travel day. Before sunset Norm put us on a new course, some 60 to 70 miles South of this position where some boats had very good action fishing bluefin tuna. The seas continue to be mild, what better place to be than offshore durring a heat wave?”
