Chasing the bite
"We left Roca Partida mid morning," wrote Polaris Supreme skipper Tommy Rothery March 1, "after not catching a fish, having no current and being all ripped up. It was a completely different place today; there was no life at all. We got into San Benedicto at 1400 hours and got the skiffs in the water. Although signs were good, fishing stunk. We picked up one hoo in the skiff and that was it. The weather is still beautiful. Enclosed is a picture of a 400+ lb. blue marlin Kub Ito caught trolling some big pink thing into San Benedicto. We will be stay for the morning bite, we saw a little cow sign."
At the dock March 7, Rothery weighed the first place tuna at 197 pounds for Jeff Brown of Vale, OR. Brown said he bagged it with a sardine on a Hayabusa 5/0 hook. "I had to get in the skiff right away," he said. "It took about an hour and 45 minutes." He used 60-pound Jin Kai line on a Penn 30SW reel and a Calstar 6465XH rod.
Mike Abatti of El Centro was second, for a 151-pounder. Buzz McBee of Martinsburg, IA was third, for a 134-pound yellowfin tuna. Kub Ito of Harbor City had a 59-pound wahoo. Greg Bentley of El Centro showed off a husky pink pargo, prized table fare.
