Boy gets cow
"We're still at Clarion," wrote Rodney Okimoto, Qualifier 105 skipper, March 6. "We scratched away at the tuna and wahoo today. We had some really nice ones over 100 pounds. Brian Lemberg got one about 210 pounds today on the kite. That was a beautiful fish! Gary Bush got to catch a 125-pounder twice. We had a problem with the backup. He ended up snagging the line. We got it back and put him in the skiff and we hunted it down. That was a pretty good one.
"We're going to stay one more day here and see what tomorrow brings. We had basically no evening bite at all today. Hopefully we'll get another big one tomorrow and it will make me stay again. That's the plan. We're making bait right now. It's been a little tougher to make bait--a lot of sharks. We've had a shark problem at night also. Excellent weather."
At the dock March 14, Joseph Cavallero of Burlingame had the biggest fish, a 229-pound tuna, but he wasn't there to pose with it. Skipper Okimoto said it was a chunk fish caught on a red Eagle Claw circle hook. Okimoto also said the bite had shifted from morning and evening to midday.
