Long Range Kite Red Hot

Big tuna fishing rolled toward a peak near the end of the season, as late April catches rose in both quantity and quality. Local and short-range anglers are interested in sightings of bluefin and albacore. The first albacore was caught at eight a.m. Wednesday morning, May 3.... "That same school of big fish showed up again," said Randy Toussaint after mooring Royal Star May 2, "and it was the same deal; you get a bunch, bing, bing, bing, or you don't get any. You've got to be ready when they come through, because they don't stay very long."

Toussaint's anglers may not have been prepared for the midafternoon appearance of whopper tuna at Clarion Island, but they managed to deck ten yellowfin over the 200-pound mark. The largest went to Izorline president Steve Ichinokuchi, who realized a 20-year quest of bagging a cow tuna.

Steve used his own line and Spectra backing to take a 260.8-pound yellowfin on a squid under the kite. He used an 11/0 Mustad hook, a Penn 80W reel and a Calstar 760H rod.

"I didn't see the strike," said Ichinokuchi, "but the kite went up and the line went down and I knew I was on, all right. The fish ran out to 350 or 400 yards. It made three good runs, and it took me around the boat. At the end, it came up near the bow and we got three gaffs in it, and that's when I knew how big it was. I guess I'll be going for a 300-pounder, now."

Second and third places went to Andy Cooperman of Oceanside, for a 252-pounder and a 234-pound tuna. He fished with flying fish on the kite, with 11/0 Mustad hooks, 135-pound blue Izorline and Spectra, a Penn 80W reel and a Calstar 760H rod.
