He got strapped
"We found dorado on kelps with wahoo," said Polaris Supreme skipper Tom Rothery October 15, "between Mag Bay and Alijos Rocks, and good yellowtail fishing, as good as its been for several years, at Hipolito and San Pablo."

Chartermaster "Mercy" Tony Chargois of Pittsburgh, CA and the Get Strapped Fishing Tackle company made a good case for his product, the GS Bracket, by winning first place in the jackpot, for a 94-pound yellowfin tuna.

"It's my best fish ever," said Chargois. "Go light and win the fight. Get strapped in."

Tony said he fished a sardine on a 4/0 Mustad hook, a 40-pound wind-on Seaguar fluorocarbon topshot on 50-pound Spectra, with an Accurate 665H reel (he was hooked into his bracket and harness) and a Calstar 765XL rod. He said it took 20 minutes.

Ernie Cariaga of Long Beach was second, for a 58-pound tuna, and Greg Carlton of Martinez was third, for a 56-pound wahoo. Bryan Tomaneng of Moreno Valley took a 44-pound yellowtail, and posed with the winners.Hills Hills

Jackpot Winners Aboard the Shogun Wahoo on 13
Bruce Smith took Shogun's 26 anglers on a tour of The Ridge for mixed near-limits of yellowfin, yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and miscellaneous species. The ten-day trip returned to Fisherman's Landing October 15.

"We had great weather," said Smith, "and excellent dorado fishing. Some of 'em were big. There was good wahoo fishing on the 13, and good yellowtail at Hipolito and the 13."

Richard Kelly of Redlands won first place, for a 65-pound yellowfin. Steve Smith of Sierra Vista, AZ was second (his sixth straight trip in the jackpot, he said), for a 64-pound wahoo, and Eddie Puente of Saugus was third for a 60-pound wahoo.

Jerry Orr of Paoli OK only needed five minutes to whip a 78-pound wahoo for honorable mention.

"He bit on a purple and black, beat-up Marauder," said Jerry. "I was trolling 80-pound gear with a Tiagra 50W and a Calstar 765M rod."

Orr's wahoo was the best so far this new season.
