GULL/SILVER/GRANT/JUNE LAKE RAINBOWS
Trout fishing is excellent throughout the Eastern Sierra and things are expected to get even better as summer conditions give way to cooler fall weather.
(June Lake) Grant, Gull, Silver and June Lakes are all fishing very well for anglers using a variety of different techniques.
The most popular approach is simply soaking an inflated ‘crawler or a pea size ball of Power Bait. Anglers that prefer a more active approach are scoring while tossing lures such as Tasmanian Devils and small count down Rapalas.
Trollers are hooking up at these lakes using a range of different lures, but overall the most effective offering is the tried and true threaded worm pulled behind a set of willow leaf flashers.
(Bridgeport) “The West Walker River is fishing well these days,” reported Jim Reid at Ken’s Sporting Goods. “Both the canyon section and the area near Pickle Meadows are producing rainbow trout on hopper patterns teamed with a smallish dropper nymph.”
“The East Walker has gotten a little tougher recently but anglers are still catching some nice trout. Hopper patterns are working in the morning. As the day goes on smaller dries and nymphs begin producing well. Don’t look for the fish in the deep pools as they seem to be holding in the faster moving areas,” tipped Reid.
Bridgeport Reservoir is kicking out big numbers of rainbows. The best spots are Buckeye Bay and Rainbow Point. Bait anglers are pulling out limits while soaking salmon eggs, Power Bait and inflated worms. Small Rapalas and flashers teamed with a worm are producing for trollers.
(Bishop) According to the folks at Brock’s Sporting Goods, fly fishing is going strong in both Rock Creek and Bishop Creek. Dry flies and nymphs are both doing damage. During the evening mayfly hatches are making for solid dry fly fishing for anglers tossing pale evening dun imitations.
The Lower Owens is flowing fairly quickly, but anglers working with nymphs and streamers are hooking fish.
High country lakes such as Sabrina and South Lakes are kicking out limits of trout for bait anglers working from the bank.

Great Places to Fish
Most of the fishing in this area is accessed from the east side of the Sierras. In the Bishop area you might want to check out Lake Sabrina. Although regularly stocked, there are some old lunkers to be had. The area receives pressure from the southern Californians so you will find many of the rivers and streams are stocked frequently. For the adventurous, the area offers wilderness areas full of lakes and streams. Sorry you have to walk in. In the Bridgeport area the East Walker River offers brown trout to 10 lbs. for fly and spin fishermen. Upper Twin Lake has kokanee and some large trout. Other places to look into are Crowley Lake, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, Convict Lake and Rock Creek Lake. All offer a variety of vacation and fishing options. |
