Troutball is an irreverent look at the sport of fly fishing by balladeer Greg Keeler. His masterfully loony storytelling might have you thinking his flybox may be short a Royal Coachman or two, but by the time the CD is over you too will be convinced that he has somehow managed to fill the void with marshmallows.

For example:

"Trout eggs in cheese cloth fished just off the bottom,
Eyes gouged from perch just as soon as you've caught 'em,
Pools chumed with corn while the fisherman waits,
These are a few of my favorite baits."

Keeler had been writing and performing zany ballads about fishing and other subjects since 1986. David Behr, a longtime fishing buddy was hosting a show on a Colorado public radio last year when he decided to play a few of Greg's demented songs on the air. The response was so positive the two decided to produce Troutball

The CD consists of 10 songs and 4 poems. Most of the music is solo acoustic guitar playing old standards to which Greg's poetry is set. For the most part, the music is easy-going enough to play in the background while you go about your business, without demanding your total attention. The two exceptions to the acoustic backgrounds are "WD-40 Polka" complete with clarinet, accordion, and tuba; and the heavy metal finale "Trash Fish".

Nothing is spared from Greg's sharp satirical wit. Fun is poked at Swiss army knives, duct tape, carp, WD-40, Lawrence Welk, King James English, Acid Rock, and couch potatoes among other things.

Although I enjoyed the CD, I found the language is somewhat potent in places and may not be suitable for children, or anyone who attends church on a regular basis.

Purchase information is available at theTrout Ball website, along with a couple samples of music in MP3 and .wav formats.
