Technique:
Bank Fishing Salmon On The Trinity

June 11, 2004

Techniques Index

The Trinity River spring salmon run is just getting started and will run through August. Here are a few Techniques to help you hook your first salmon of the year.

For bank anglers you are going to want to target the deeper sections of the river. As the salmon make their way up from the ocean, they look for the deeper holes to hold up in. The deep holes offer them cover and safety from predators and is a great place to get some needed rest from their journey up the river.

To hook into these fish from the bank you are going to need a pretty stout rod so you can control the fish and keep it in the deeper section of river. Use a 20lbs test main line and 15 pound leader. I like to use Maxima. It has great knot strength and is really tough.

Use a size 1 hook for Trinity River salmon with a bait loop tied on the hook. You also need a fish pill to help float your hook off the bottom. The fish pill is a little piece of colored Styrofoam that takes away the weight of the hook and lets the roe float naturally in the current.

Salmon roe is the preferred bait when bank fishing. You are going to want a pretty good chunk. Salmon have big mouths and the bigger chunk of roe will leave a good scent trail. Before you toss it out there, put some of your favorite scent on it. Try some of Pautzke's Liquid Krill. It works well for salmon.

Your weight set up can be a sliding slinky or you can run a dropper of about 10 inches in length and attach a piece of lead to it. You will know your weight is correct when your line moves through the hole and only touches bottom a few times. Keep making casts from the top of the hole and let your offering drift down to the fish in the bottom of the hole.

The Trinity has a ton of places to fish from the bank. Highway 299 parallels the river for most of its way from Weaverville to Willow Creek and there are plenty of places to pull over and fish in not so crowded conditions. If you saved your copies of the older issues of the Fish Sniffer, there are good maps of all the fishing holes on the Trinity. Also check the online map. Stream time also has a good map of the holes.

Thanks and good luck fishing,

Regards,

Tim King
