Last winter I was bitten with the sturgeon bug, being without a boat I was stuck trying to nail one of these prehistoric beasts from shore. I and another lady angler would show up at China Camp on one of the bluffs where only men, and occasionally their
wives or girlfriends, hung out. You'd think we were some sort of freaks or something judging from the looks we would get. We caught a few stripers but no sturgeon.
Sturgeon season passed I got a great job and since last winter I have been going out on the party boats about once a month. I have started to go on these boats alone and find it one of the best ways to get some time to myself. It's kind of funny when I tell the guys on board that I left my boyfriend at home so I can concentrate on fishing. I caught the sturgeon on my third try aboard the Captain Hook, the first time I went alone, the second time I took my boyfriend and one of his buddies. After having no luck that Sunday the Captain suggested I come the following Tues. as the tides would be better and less people would be on the boat. I took him up on his offer and showed up Dec 29. I figured it was my last
chance to get a sturgeon in 1998.
Well you know what they say, third times a charm. I had just come
from the restroom and had a sandwich in my hand, as I sat down I got the classic sturgeon pump. I waited for the second pump, and set the hook hard. I looked up and saw a sturgeon jump out of the water. Wahoo!! Finally. I got it to the boat and Captain Chris, and deckhand John expertly landed the fish. It was only 10:30 and I had my limit. The fish measured in at 57 inches. What a great day. The captain even let me call my boyfriend at work to rub it in, after all he was the one who joked I was bad luck that Sun. we got skunked. Hmm, I wonder who's the one that's bad luck.
