NorCal has all this to offer, from the rolling Sacramento and Feather Rivers with their spring current and green banks just greening up to the cold clear waters of the Truckee area reservoirs like Donner, Stampede, Boca, and Prosser sitting under the Sierra peaks. One day you're drifting through river bends chasing moving fish, the next you're trolling deep or casting shallows in alpine lakes where the water stays blue and the scenery does the rest. It's the kind of spread that makes every trip feel fresh without ever driving halfway across the state.
Stripers are pushing upstream right now in good numbers on the big rivers while mackinaw hold deep at Donner with browns and rainbows mixing in closer to shore. Stampede kicks off early kokanee action as things warm and the other Truckee reservoirs keep steady trout bites year round. The fights shift with the water but every one leaves you with a grin and a story for the dock.
One of the guides locals always return to is Shaun Rainsbarger at Shaun's Guide Service. He's been crushing it on both the river stripers and the high country trout lately and has a few openings left this spring, so shoot him a text and see if you can lock one in before the calendar fills.
