Tom Guzman knows that when Irvine Regional Park drops 800 pounds of fresh trout into the water, you’ve got to show up with a plan. He recently hit the lake and walked away with a beautiful 2.1 pound lightning trout, and he’s crediting his success to a mix of new gear and a very specific scent strategy.
Tom was throwing the new spoons from Magic Fish Waters, but he didn't just fish them straight out of the package. He’s been experimenting with different scents, and for this catch, a "rusty garlic" blend was the winner.
With Southern California’s weather being so hit-or-miss lately, Tom says you can't get stuck in your ways. He keeps a wide variety of spoon colors and scent profiles on hand to deal with the changing light and water conditions. It’s all about staying versatile. Next up, Tom is taking his winning "variety pack" of lures to Dixon Lake to see if the garlic trick works there too.
